New Diagnostic Methods for Identifying Damage
New examination methods and modern diagnostic equipment enable simple identification of spinal damage. They include multifunctional radiological diagnosis with image intensifier, raster stereography to measure curvatures of the spine without the use of X-rays, or MRI and CT scans with three-dimensional image reconstruction. But application of contrast agents to the intervertebral discs can also identify painful degenerative diseases as well as the appropriate therapy.
Gentle surgery for rapid recovery
Often we are able to help our patients without having to perform surgery. If surgical intervention is unavoidable, however, we limit the risks as much as possible. Our most common procedure uses the minimally invasive technique, during which only the smallest of cuts are made. A microscope is then inserted and used to prepare the area while guaranteeing minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. Such a technique ensures that our work is particularly safe. You recover quickly and the spine can return to work not long after surgery. If a minimally invasive procedure is not possible, we use other surgical techniques customised to the specific disease. You are cared for throughout by a team of anaesthetists, physiotherapists and experienced nursing staff who work hand in hand with the surgeons to support you in your recovery.
Slipped discs - surgery or injections
Slipped discs can sometimes be treated with minimally invasive surgery using an endoscope (keyhole technique) or openly with microsurgery. The method we use depends on the type and localisation of the slipped disc. A number of slipped discs can also be treated successfully with targeted X-ray-guided injections, however, and therefore need no surgery whatsoever.
Diagnosis and Equipment
To locate the spinal disease and identify the exact cause of the pain, injections may be administered in the area of the spine. They help to diagnose the source of the pain as well as treat it, by numbing the painful areas and relieving irritation. Small injection needles can be used to infiltrate muscles, vertebral joints, iliosacral joints (pelvic joints) and nerve roots with anaesthetic agents and antiinflammatory medicines, in order to achieve successful results in the long term.
Myelography
During myelography, a thin needle is used to inject a contrast agent into the spinal meninges (membrane surrounding the spinal cord). X-rays taken subsequently provide information on compressions to the nerve structures in different postures.
Discography
Like myelography, discography also involves the injection of contrast agent into the disc space of a damaged segment of the spine in order to assess the condition of the diseased disc by taking X-ray images. Sensations experienced during the examination provide information on the cause of the existing pain.
