Spinal Surgery with Scoliosis Centre. Treatment concepts

Conservative and surgical treatment concepts are offered for the entire rangs of spinal disorders. In order to select the best method of treatment, we perform a complete neuroradiological assessment of the reported symptoms.

Special treatment for scoliosis

During the scoliosis consulting hours, we provide individual advice, provide patients with a corset and perform on-going check-ups throughout treatment. For more severe curvatures, we use state-of-the-art corrective and stabilisation procedures. Dorsal and ventral surgeries are offered, depending on the indication.

Treatment of scoliosis in children

We will consult on children with severe disabilities resulting from paralytic forms for scoliosis and those with congenital changes in the spine. An interdisciplinary approach involving Neurology, Anaesthesiology and Paediatric Neurology is taken when investigating and providing subsequent care for severe neurogenic forms of scoliosis. Infants with congenital spinal deformities or neurogenic forms of scoliosis are treated early on using a newly developed corrective procedure which increases safety during the operation. Further growth of the spine is ensured with this system. We also perform corrective surgeries for changes to the chest wall, such as thoracoplasty for rib humps.

Spinal surgeries

  • State-of-the-art surgical repair and stabilisation of the spine in cases of deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis)
  • Disc surgery for slipped discs (minimally invasive techniques)
  • Implantation of prosthetic discs in the lumbar and cervical spine
  • Minimally invasive techniques for the decompression of the spinal canal in cases of narrowing of the canal (spinal canal stenosis)
  • Minimally invasive fusion techniques from the ventral or dorsal side of the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine
  • Stabilisation techniques with state-of-the-art implants (prosthetic vertabrae, artificial discs, bone grafts and autologous bone)
  • Minimally invasive stabilising surgeries for osteoporotic fractures (vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty)

Minimally invasive spinal surgery: Keyhole surgery

We use a conserving surgical procedure ("keyhole surgery"), which enables a stabilisation system to be inserted from the back through the skin. This avoids the time-consuming procedures, large scars and extensive follow-up care that had been necessary until recently. For percutaneous stabilisation surgeries, the skin incision is limited to no more than four small stab incisions. Patients can be mobilised on the day the surgery is performed.

Even greater safety thanks to new technologies

Using a navigation system that is state-of-the-art medical technology and which provides the surgeon with visual 3-D information at all stages of an operation, we are able to perform our surgeries with the highest precision. When placing pedicle screws, we are able to ensure precision with framents millimetres across, thus ensuring the protection of the nearby spinal cord. During the surgical treatment of deformities, we use a high-tech electrophysiology measuring system. An early warning system alerts surgeons if any changes start to take place in the area of the sensitive spinal cord and makes it possible for them to act at an early stage. This high-tech systems considerably increase patient safety.
