Cardiac surgery. Our Treatment Concepts

Causes of heart diseases

Cardiovascular diseases represent by far the main cause of death in modern industrial countries, in Germany this involves 430,000 people per year. Coronary heart disease is a generic term for heart diseases caused by constriction or blockage of the coronary arteries. It is caused by poor circulation and therefore oxygen deficiency in the heart muscle, caused by progressive arterial sclerotic constriction or blockage of the coronary arteries due to a blood clot or a so-called plaque rupture.

Cardiac surgery - different treatment methods

In Germany, approximately 71,000 bypass operations and 250,000 heart catheter treatments are performed in cardiac surgery each year. The proportion of coronary bypass operations is around 70 % of all heart surgery interventions. Congenital tissue damage or changes in form, degenerative, sclerosing changes and inflammations are the most frequent causes of diseases of heart valves, which steer the bloodstream. Very often, the heart valves on the left-hand side of the heart (aorta or mitral valve) are affected by the diseases, as these are exposed to the highest stresses.

Postoperative rehabilitation in cardiac surgery

The Schön Klinik Vogtareuth offers patients sustainable in-patient rehabilitation following bypass and heart valve operations and interventions on the aorta in the thorax. Under the medical management of the consultant of the clinic for rehabilitation medicine, the patients are guided to the everyday exertion and fitness to be expected. The decisive advantage is that the heart surgery department which operates first is available around the clock to help with the treatment.

The cardiac surgery emergency ward - local treatment saves human lives

Through fast and efficient cooperation between registered doctors, the surrounding cardiological centres and the clinic for cardiac surgery at the Schön Klinik Vogtareuth, optimum treatment can be ensured for patients with heart diseases. In this way, the local treatment means that at least 60 more lives can be saved per year, which people would not have survived if they had had to undergo lengthy and complicated transport. As every second really does count in an emergency, our cardiac surgery is always on 24-hour standby, i.e. even at the weekends and on public holidays. The proportion of emergency patients in our department is around 15 %, nationwide they account for approx. 11 % of all operations. The complication rate and lethality (proportion of patients that die) is far below the national average for this group patients in our hospital.

Efficient treatment in emergencies

All interventions on the heart are performed at the Schön Klinik Vogtareuth

All interventions on the heart are performed at the Schön Klinik Vogtareuth

Summarising, any emergency can be immediately operated on in our clinic. The whole range of adult heart surgery is covered, including highly complicated interventions in cardiovascular stoppage. Emergency operations are performed more frequently in our region that the national average, on the other hand, the complications rate is far lower. Our heart surgery therefore makes a decisive contribution to efficient treatment of patients in the region, especially for emergency operations.
