Orthopaedics. Sports Medicine. Rehabilitation. Medical Care

Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation in orthopaedics.

Early rehabilitation guarantees the success of an operation.

Early rehabilitation guarantees the success of an operation.

The Specialist Centre for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine has many years of experience in postoperative rehabilitation. Our orthopaedic surgeons have particularly specialised in rehabilitation after endoprothesis and severe intervention to the spine. We have developed special concepts for follow-up treatment of amputations. For pain therapy and treatment of osteoporosis we have likewise gained an excellent reputation. Stylized therapy programs remove restrictions step by step and help us to achieve new mobility.

Our treatment concepts for orthopaedic rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation after operations and after endoprothesis.

Regaining as much function and strength as possible.

Selectively restoring strength in the joints.

Selectively restoring strength in the joints.

Following endoprosthetic surgery, intensive rehabilitation is useful for the purposes of recovering the greatest possible functionality and strength in the joints. Rehabilitation takes also place after orthopaedic, accident surgery, neuro-surgical and vascular surgery operations. Every year, our Specialist Centre for Orthopaedics treats more than 1,000 patients having undergone hip, knee or shoulder replacement. Rehabilitation can take place as an inpatient but also as an outpatient if the individual's health permits.

Early rehabilitation in close collaboration with the surgical clinic.

Because many replacements today take place under minimally invasive surgical conditions, the tissue around the joint is mostly spared and patients can very soon be remobilised. This is particularly the case with modern titanium implants which are coated in a bone-like substance and are anchored in the bones without the use of cement. Hence, much less bone substance needs to be removed. We have designed our therapeutic concepts in close cooperation with referring acute clinics in order to facilitate the smooth transition into rehabilitation. According to the surgeon's advice a treatment concept is designed individually for each patient, and entails a variety of components.

Become active again as a result of tailored sports and movement therapy.

It is predominantly patients who have undergone a hip, knee or shoulder replacement who attend our clinic. But the numbers of replacements for ankle joints are also increasing. We provide patients having undergone a replacement with a qualified follow-up programme which restores the functionality of their joints. For despite the now very sophisticated surgical techniques which are on offer, many patients who come for rehabilitation have distinct functional impairments which often have arisen as a result of years of conservation and incorrect load distribution.

Individual agreements on each treatment schedule.

Based on the advice given by our surgeons, we hold joint discussions with therapists, doctors and other specialists to establish an individual procedure for each patient, and document this therapeutic schedule. During visits, our specialists discuss the treatments with the patients and depending on the progress made, adjust the schedule accordingly.

Treating postoperative symptoms and promoting wound healing.

Following shoulder replacement: maintaining mobility with motorised splints.

The combination of intensive physical and physiotherapeutic measures leads to a reduction in postoperative discomfort and rapid healing of wounds. Lymph drainage can alleviate swelling: the tissue which is overloaded with fluid can be decongested, thus alleviating pain and accelerating the healing process. Sometimes the joints are mobilised using motorised splints which can be adjusted specifically to each patient, permitting as rapid a return to mobility as possible.

Alleviating pain with a sophisticated concept.

For most patients with an endoprosthesis, the pain initially represents a serious problem. Therefore, we design an individual pain therapy concept in line with the latest scientific knowledge. Following thorough, specialised diagnostic procedures, our patients are prescribed medication in line with the regulations of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Targeted positioning techniques, as well as chirotherapies and manual techniques, are also used with the aim of alleviating the pain.

Regaining functionality with physical therapy.

Targeted physiotherapy for restoring joint function.

Targeted physiotherapy for restoring joint function.

To restore as much of the function of your joints as possible, our doctors collaborate with therapists in various specialist areas: physiotherapists improve the mobility of the joints, and teach strengthening and coordination exercises. They correct poor posture in order to redevelop ergonomic mobility. Aside from individual therapies, specially designed group therapies are held specifically for hip, knee and shoulder patients with different levels of severity - sometimes in gym rooms, sometimes in the exercise pool.

Sport and movement therapy. Strength and endurance for all the important muscle groups.

Endurance training to prepare for everyday stresses and strains.

Endurance training to prepare for everyday stresses and strains.

At an early stage of medical training therapy, when care must be taken with limited mobility, specific areas of the musculature are put into training. Progressive and comprehensive training, specifically adapted to your own abilities, means you can build up endurance, coordination and strength in all of the body's muscle groups. Regular training modules on medical training apparatus, but also in communal rooms, in the exercise pool or outdoors, create important synergies with physical therapies and prepare you for the demands of everyday life.

Straightforward care with medical aids.

Our occupational therapies help in the selection of medical aids which can be ordered and fitted by the technical orthopaedic workshop which is located within our clinic.

Help with the return home.

Regular talks broaden our patients' knowledge about their own disease and the associated risks. As needed, our patients with endoprosthetics can also consult a psychologist who will advise them on how to better manage their disease and the attendant limitations. Our social services provide help for the return home: healthcare support and occupational reintegration, as far as self-help groups at a local level for exchanging information with counterparts.

Follow-up treatment of interventions to the spine.

Alleviating pain and recovering strength.

Rehabilitation following spinal surgery.

Rehabilitation following spinal surgery.

Intensive rehabilitation following spinal surgery is useful for relieving pain long-term and recovering stability in the spine. Chiropractical and pharmaceutical therapies, fluoroscopic infiltration on the spine and stylized physiotherapeutic movement and training plans ensure an optimal therapy during rehabilitation. An in-house orthopaedic workshop makes it easier to adapt corsets and other orthopaedic aids.

Rehabilitation can take place as an inpatient but also as an outpatient if the individual's health permits.

Our follow-up treatments for spinal surgery.

Mostly, patients attend our clinic following surgery to an intervertebral disc, after surgery for spinal stenosis, with segmental instabilities, osteoporosis and rheumatic diseases. Our experts are particularly knowledgeable with a view to moderate and major spinal surgery, such as stiffening (spondylodesis of the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine) and corrective procedures (e.g. for slipped vertebrae or scoliosis). Patients having had a vertebral body replaced (e.g. vertebral fractures following trauma, osteoporosis or cancer) will also find experienced specialists at our clinic. We have many years of experience in providing follow-up treatment to patients with artificial discs.

Individual agreements on each treatment schedule.

Always adapting treatment schedules to therapeutic progress.

Multidisciplinary Pain therapy.

Preventing pain from becoming a chronic condition.

Pain therapy distinct and targeted on the individual patients.

Pain therapy distinct and targeted on the individual patients.

Orthopaedic ailments are often accompanied by recurrent pain. We can assist you by delivering a special pain therapy concept in line with the latest scientific standards. Thereby, we rely on interdisciplinary collaboration. Our specialists in orthopaedics, neurology, internal medicine and rehabilitation work closely with a number of qualified therapists (physical therapy, physiotherapy, sport and occupational therapy) and in-house clinical psychologists. Only in such a way are we able to counter the risk of your pain becoming a chronic condition.

Multimodal concept with good therapeutic outcomes.

One aspect to a multimodal concept: electrotherapy relieves pain.

Your treatment starts with an exact analysis of your state of health. Aside from medical factors, we also consider your social and psychological situation. Following diagnosis, we compile an individual treatment plan for you which will entail a variety of medical and therapeutic approaches. Such a multimodal pain therapy concept offers much better therapeutic outcomes than medication alone. This fact has been proven by numerous scientific studies.

Specific know-how in semi-invasive techniques and neural therapy.

Our patients are prescribed medication in line with the guidelines of the World Health Organisation (WHO). We aim to achieve rapid and immediate pain relief in order to break the vicious circle of discomfort. Help with the return home.

Regular talks broaden our patients' knowledge about their own disease and the associated risks. You will be introduced to relaxation training, helping you to better cope with strain and direct your attention away from your pain. We use Jacobson's muscle relaxation techniques which are easy to learn and can be practised extensively at our clinic. Hence you can also continue to practise such useful techniques when you are at home. As needed, our pain patients can also consult a psychologist who will advise them on how to better recognise and manage their pain. Our social services provide help for the return home: healthcare support and occupational reintegration, as far as self-help groups at a local level for exchanging information with counterparts.

Help for patients with osteoporosis.

Sound diagnostic approach with thorough consultation.

With the help of modern diagnostics, we can plan treatment for each patient individually. Nowadays, thanks to a promising pharmaceutical therapy, the patient can be assisted very well with osteoporosis. Physiotherapists and diet assistants are supporting the affected persons with the further stabilization of the results.

Timely diagnosis – before a bone is broken due to osteoporosis.

Negligible exposure to radiation - bone density measurement.

Negligible exposure to radiation - bone density measurement.

The key to modern osteoporosis treatment is timely diagnosis – before a bone is broken. Fractures must be prevented as far as possible, since 50 percent of individuals who have suffered a fracture to the femoral neck, for example, lose their everyday independence. But osteoporosis is not easy to identify, since the bone degenerates slowly and unnoticed, and it is not accompanied by pain.

Early measurement of bone density – especially in patients at high risk of osteoporosis.

Our hospital's osteoporosis experts estimate any risks as soon as a patient is admitted - by carrying out a thorough examination and asking questions about relevant risks. Patients found to have a high risk are advised to undergo bone density measurement, which is done by means of dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This is the most commonly used method, and in fact the only one recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), for measuring a patient's risk of bone fracture. The examination is painless and harmless, since it involves an extremely low level of radiation exposure. If the T-score measured by DXA is equal to or lower than -2.5, this indicates a decrease in bone density commensurate with osteoporosis. In such a case, we will immediately arrange for further diagnostic measures as well as treatment.

Individual concepts for treating osteoporosis.

Experienced therapists care for our osteoporosis patients during training therapy.

Experienced therapists care for our osteoporosis patients during training therapy.

When treating osteoporosis patients, we first consider any other diseases such as rheumatism, lung disease, kidney disease, impaired mobility following fractures to the vertebrae or femoral neck. Further diagnostic measures such as X-rays and special laboratory tests are carried out at our hospital, accordingly. The treatment programme at our centre encompasses heat treatments, electrotherapy, massages as well as physical therapy sessions, movement therapy in the pool and medical training therapy (sport therapy). Our hospital treatments are geared individually to the physical limitations of each patient.

Medicinal treatment in line with recognised guidelines.

When administering medicinal treatments, our osteoporosis experts consider the risk factors which are relevant to the individual patient: Is he or she very prone to falls? Does the patient smoke? Is there any family history? Is the body weight low? Is the patient taking medications, e.g. cortisone, which promote the development of osteoporosis? Our hospital doctors take all such questions into account when grading the severity of the osteoporosis and initiating the necessary medicinal treatment. While doing this, we are very strict about heeding the latest recognised guidelines of the German Confederation of Osteology (Dachverband Osteologie).

Training is not possible in the presence of pain.

Exercise is paramount in the treatment of osteoporosis. Yet nobody is willing to exercise if they are in pain. Consequently, the experts at our hospital place great emphasis on managing each patient's pain individually. Aside from medicinal treatments, complementary procedures such as neural therapy and acupuncture are used.

Only a well informed patient can achieve success with continued treatment

Targeted education at medical appointments and regular talks on osteoporosis as well as nutrition are all part of our hospital's treatment concept. Only then can we send our patients home in the knowledge that they are fully informed.

Rehabilitation following amputation.

Readjusting to everyday after amputations.

Owing to their expertise and many years of experience, our team of experts can deal with the consequences of an unavoidable amputation in order to enable you to return as quickly as possible to a normal private and professional life. They promote wound healing, relieve phantom pains, prescribe a specific prothesis and make sure that you practise everyday acitivities with this prothesis. They show you how to avoid subsequent problems as a result of incorrect load distribution. A team of qualified experts enables to return to a normal private and professional life.

Coordinated teamwork between various professional groups.

Specialist care - not only with sport therapy.

Specialist care - not only with sport therapy.

The loss of a body part is a serious blow to all patients. Hence it is all the more important that you are seen by qualified experts during the weeks after your operation. Owing to their expertise and many years of experience, they can deal with the consequences of an unavoidable amputation in order to enable you to return as quickly as possible to a normal private and professional life. A rehabilitation team, which in the case of follow-up treatment for amputation inevitably includes physiotherapists and experienced orthopaedic technicians, coordinates its work in order to provide exceptional support for your limitations.

Promoting wound healing with targeted strategies.

Following amputation, your wounds first need to heal properly. Our specialists and nursing staff who are trained in wound management can help promote wound healing by applying special techniques. The combination of intensive physical and physiotherapeutic measures leads to a reduction in postoperative discomfort and swelling, as well as relieving pain. Manual lymph drainage in particular helps to accelerate the regeneration process in the surrounding tissue.

Improving physical conditions.

Using physical measures - in this case electrotherapy - to prepare for the prosthesis.

Targeted methods are used to treat the amputation stump: In addition to lymph drainage, dressings and further physical methods are used to harden and shape the stump. You will also undergo regular physical therapy in order to improve the function of your joints and learn strengthening exercises. By teaching you coordination exercises, our physiotherapists help you to improve your balance and manage compensatory reactions.

Regaining functionality with a prosthesis.

We will prescribe you a specific prosthesis, or inspect your prosthesis and adapt it as necessary. To this aim, our physiotherapists collaborate with a renowned orthopaedic technology company that has its own workshop at our clinic.

Readjusting to everyday with the help of physical therapy.

Learning to walk with a prosthesis.

Our physiotherapists will work hard to help you learn how to walk with your prosthesis. The distance you are able to walk on your own will continually increase. We also make sure that you are able to wear the prosthesis for a little longer day by day. During the rest of your stay, your gait will be repeatedly analysed and corrected, as necessary, in order to prevent subsequent problems as a result of incorrect load distribution. Our physiotherapists will practise everyday activities with you, such as climbing stairs, getting up after a fall, overcoming obstacles as well as putting on the prosthesis and removing it.
