Rehabilitation Following Amputation. Our Treatment Concept

Coordinated teamwork between various professional groups.

Specialist care - not only with sport therapy.

Specialist care - not only with sport therapy.

The loss of a body part is a serious blow to all patients. Hence it is all the more important that you are seen by qualified experts during the weeks after your operation. Owing to their expertise and many years of experience, they can deal with the consequences of an unavoidable amputation in order to enable you to return as quickly as possible to a normal private and professional life. A rehabilitation team, which in the case of follow-up treatment for amputation inevitably includes physiotherapists and experienced orthopaedic technicians, coordinates its work in order to provide exceptional support for your limitations.

Following amputation: promoting wound healing with targeted strategies.

Following amputation, your wounds first need to heal properly. Our specialists and nursing staff who are trained in wound management can help promote wound healing by applying special techniques. The combination of intensive physical and physiotherapeutic measures leads to a reduction in postoperative discomfort and swelling, as well as relieving pain. Manual lymph drainage in particular helps to accelerate the regeneration process in the surrounding tissue.

Improving physical conditions.

Using physical measures - in this case electrotherapy - to prepare for the prosthesis.

Targeted methods are used to treat the amputation stump: In addition to lymph drainage, dressings and further physical methods are used to harden and shape the stump. You will also undergo regular physical therapy in order to improve the function of your joints and learn strengthening exercises. By teaching you coordination exercises, our physiotherapists help you to improve your balance and manage compensatory reactions.

Following amputation. Regaining functionality with a prosthesis.

We will prescribe you a specific prosthesis, or inspect your prosthesis and adapt it as necessary. To this aim, our physiotherapists collaborate with a renowned orthopaedic technology company that has its own workshop at our clinic.

Readjusting to everyday with the help of physical therapy.

Learning to walk with a prosthesis.

Learning to walk with a prosthesis.

Our physiotherapists will work hard to help you learn how to walk with your prosthesis. The distance you are able to walk on your own will continually increase. We also make sure that you are able to wear the prosthesis for a little longer day by day. During the rest of your stay, your gait will be repeatedly analysed and corrected, as necessary, in order to prevent subsequent problems as a result of incorrect load distribution. Our physiotherapists will practise everyday activities with you, such as climbing stairs, getting up after a fall, overcoming obstacles as well as putting on the prosthesis and removing it.

Sport and movement therapy. Strength and endurance for all the important muscle groups.

Sport therapy following amputation: rebuilding strength in all the muscle groups.

Sport therapy following amputation: rebuilding strength in all the muscle groups.

With medical training therapy, you exercise your muscle strength and endurance in training sessions adapted specifically to your own capabilities. Daily training modules on medical training apparatus, but also in communal rooms, in the exercise pool or outdoors, create important synergies with physical therapies and prepare you for the demands of everyday life.

Help with the return home.

As needed, our patients having undergone an amputation can also consult a psychologist who will advise them on how to better manage their disease and the attendant limitations. Our social services provide help for the return home: How to adapt your living and working environment to your physical limitations, local self-help groups for exchanging information with your counterparts, where to find support – you can discuss all these questions at your own pace with our qualified social workers.
